No one has ever seen him, no one knows his face, and no photos showing him are circulating: yet BANKSY conquers the world through his work of unprecedented ethical, evocative and thematic power. Born in Bristol around 1974, generically classified as Street Artist, Banksy is an exemplary case of popularity for a living artist since the days of Andy Warhol. Today, many consider him the greatest global artist of the new Millennium.
The exhibition is an impressive event that brings together over 100 original works and objects by the British artist. There are freehand paintings from his very early career and many of hisstencils. There are silkscreen prints that Banksy considers vital to spreading his messages. There are installations, and other works from Dismaland (such as the Mickey Snake sculpture where Mickey Mouse swallowed up by a python).
Between 2002 and 2009, Banksy published 46 editioned prints sold through his publishing company Pictures On Walls in London. They are silkscreens reproducing some of his famous images many of which have also been used in his outdoor interventions that have become “popular frescoes,” The curators selected more than thirty original silkscreens for the Genoese exhibition, a path of study that includes complete text cards allowing the visitors to discover the different faceted of the artist.
Banksy has always preferred the horizontal spread of images to the creation of unique items. A lesson borrowed from Andy Warhol with his serial approach and the methodical use of screen printing. As many international experts said, Banksy represents the best evolution of the original Pop Art. The sole artist able to create a link among the Pop roots, the hip hop culture, the Eighties graffiti, and the new approaches of the digital era.
Banksy’s imaginary is simple but not elementary; with messages that, examine the themes of capitalism, war, social control, and freedom in the broadest sense, and within the paradoxes of our time. For the first time, an exhibition explores Banksy’s images within a semantic framework that brings their origins, references, relations between the elements, and the relevant planes. The exhibition includes also collectible posters, the Banksy of England banknotes – Banksy’s only work acquired by a public museum (British Museum) –, some very rare t-shirts, and vinyl cover projects. Among educational materials there are also a selection of videos and infographic items.
For this occasion, an important catalogue was published to show all the works displayed in the exhibition. Critical essays by Stefano Antonelli, Gianluca Marziani and Acoris Andipa will supplement the volume.
Exhibition produced by “Metamorfosi”.

Renowned prisoners

As it acted as a secret jail, the tower was also the site of privileged detention for renowned prisoners. We have information about the imprisonment in the 16th century of the cruel Saracen pirate Dragut, the fierce Andrea Doria’s enemy at sea.
However, it is in the 17th century that we find a crowd of famous prisoners, above all painters. We know that in that period the competition between the different workshops could be deep, and very often their members resorted to violence. Several well-known painters such as Ansaldo, Fiasella and Borzone went to prison, all of them charged with “scuffle and injuring”.
Some foreigners, too, became acquainted with the dungeons’ hard life: Pietre Mulier, called “Tempesta”, was imprisoned as he ordered the killing of his wife; Sinibaldo Scorza because of “lese-majesty”, that is to say, he betrayed his country when he cooperated with Genoa’s enemy, Emanuele di Savoia.
Nowadays, we can still find frescos in the interiors that can be traced back to those artists.
In the 17th century, it housed the conspirators Giulio Cesare Vacchero in 1612 and Stefano Raggio in 1650.
In the 19th century, it was the turn of Nicolò Paganini, arrested on the charge of kidnapping a minor, and also the patriot Jacopo Ruffini who, because of organising political rebellions in Genoa and Alessandria, remained in jail for two months and after that killed himself.

1600-1700: life in the prisons

The whole building was occupied by prisons, except the upper loft. Prisoners used to gather frequently in chains in the big vaulted common rooms. There were cells reserved for special convicts on the floors by the steep ladder.
Until the first decades of the nineteenth century, the prisons located in the Tower were destined to hold political prisoners, people who were accused of heinous crimes, and, in the more comfortable upper cells, leading members of aristocratic families waited to be ransomed.
Common prisoners used to be put into the cells next to the Palazzetto Criminale (now the seat of the Archivio di Stato), which was connected to the Palazzo Ducale by means of a suspended pontino (aerial bridge).
By looking at the records of the trial against a prison guard named Giovanni Battista Noceto, who was guilty of illegally helping some prisoners, we come to know the funny names given to the cells: Paradise, Pride, Little Queen, Women, Moon, Palm Tree, Hen, Witch, Fox, Hospital, etc. It seems that there was also a cell called Grimaldina, from which the Tower took its name.
The so-called Grimaldina prison, usually reserved for political prisoners, was located in the old Palazzo del Comune, west of the tower overlooking Via Tommaso Reggio. It is easy to figure out what life was like up there: scarce food and cold weather undermined the prisoners’ health.
For a long time prisoners were supported by the charitable actions of common people. Convicts used to rest on fetid straw mattresses, wrapped in dirty blankets. In winter, they often tried to shelter from the sleet and the wind, which blew through the grating, by piling their straw mattresses and blankets up against the windows.

The origins – The Tower and the Prisons

Orlando Grosso, who supervised the restoration work at the Palazzo Ducale from 1935 to 1940, maintained that the Tower was not built earlier than 1298 and not much later than 1307.
Yet, its origins are still debated today. According to some historical sources and the artistic features, the Tower might have been built before 1291 or even sooner, well before the construction of the 13th century private palace of Alberto Fieschi. The historian Paggi chiefly supports this theory:
“The tower – he says – may be one of the ancient defence towers of the town from the side of Serravalle. It was objected that the tower has the peculiarity of a civilian and not of a military building. But this remark is nevertheless questioned by the fact that the town wall of the 11th and 12th centuries was a kind of defence built up with all possible speed by the residents of San Lorenzo and by the Milanese of S. Ambrogio in order to shut themselves up, to guard them from the hill of S. Andrea di Banchi.
The towers were probably built up hastily just where the houses were situated, and the whole population contributed to erecting the walls between tower and tower. And each one had its own master”.
Despite the lack of firm documentation, both these theories have a foundation of their own, yet the viscount origin proposed by Poggi seems to be a more legendary than historical one. It is certain, however, that the tower was part of Alberto Fieschi’s palace.

The location Throughout the centuries the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa was regarded as the seat of power of the Republic and the Doge’s residence. After a long and important restoration lasting ten years, the palace is today not only a historical building but also and, above all, an intelligent structure, the beating heart of cultural and social activities of Genoa and its territory. Inside the Palace the show rooms, the libraries and historical archives, the research and engineering workshops connected to the city are harmonically located in illustrious historical spaces; the halls for congresses, conferences and concerts are placed within the 17th century spaces; an original and young music club can be found in the medieval cisterns, and a café is located in the large vaulted entrance hall of the Palace. Restaurants, other commercial activities and typical regional craft shops have also found their place in the building. The rooms reserved for cultural and conference activities are equipped with the most advanced video, multi-media and simultaneous translation systems.

History of the building

The construction of the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa began during the flourishing period of the Republican history of the city. Genoa was gradually consolidating its economical power in the Mediterranean sea, with the defeat of the Republic of Pisa in the naval battle at Meloria (1284) and the defeat of the Republic of Venice, in the naval battle near the island of Curzola (1298).
Oberto Spinola and Corrado Doria, Capitani del Popolo (People’s Leaders), bought in 1291 all the houses located between the churches of San Lorenzo and San Matteo.
Three years later, after the exile of its owner, they acquired the neighbouring palazzo with its tower which belonged to the heirs of Alberto Fieschi, and started the construction of the first nucleus of the Palace, which would be named “Ducale” from 1339, when it became the seat of the first Genoese Doge, Simon Boccanegra.
The foundations of the awe-inspiring tower named “Torre del Popolo” (“Tower of the People”), also belong to this early period: it was completed in 1539 and still “towers” over the old part of the city.
During the 14th century the Palace was enlarged, other buildings were added to the original one to fulfil the need for an inner square.
The medieval structure disappeared with the works carried out during the 16th century; the Palace acquired a new appearance which would represent more fittingly the new oligarchic Republic.
Andrea Ceresola from Ticino, better known as “Vannone”, was given the task of modernizing the building in 1591. The work of this artist changed the general aspect of the Palace, now enlarged with a grand covered hall, next to which were two different shaped yards.
The imposing double staircase, which goes up to the lodges on the first floor, was also ascribed to Vannone. The Western flight – often used by the Doge’s processions – leads directly to the public rooms of the Palace, i.e. the “Salone del Maggior Consiglio” (Great Council Hall) and the “Sala del Minor Consiglio” (Minor Council Hall) and to the dogal Suite.
The Chapel, in the same lodge, is a simple rectangular room entirely decorated by Giovanni Battista Carlone (1653-55). On the vault a series of frescoes refers to the glorification of the Virgin Queen, on the occasion of the proclamation of Mary as Queen of Genoa.
The intention to celebrate the glories of the town is evident in the subject chosen for the frescoes on the side wall, where examples of civic virtues are represented and inserted in a “trompe l’oeil” architectonic frame.
Apart from this set of paintings, also belonging to the decorative phase of the 17th century is the fresco by Domenico Fiasella on the left flight of stairs. This painting represents God the Father with the dead Christ in his lap surrounded by Mary and the Patron Saints Baptist, George and Bernard.
During the fire of 1777 several parts of the Palace, such as the original decoration of the “Salone del Maggior Consiglio” were destroyed. Eventually, Giuseppe Isola frescoed an allegory of the Ligurian trade in 1875.
The reconstruction of the central side of the building began from a design of the Ticinese Simone Cantoni, a famous neo-classical architect. Cantoni designed also the inner decoration of the official hall: the “Salone del Maggior Consiglio” is covered with a huge barrel vault with pavillion head-pieces and decorated with stuccoes.
The walls are cast with a set of pilasters with capitals in stucco and bases in yellow marble.
The adjacent “Salonetto” (Minor Council Hall) is elegant in its proportions and refined in its plastic gilded decorations.

The works carried out in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century contributed in altering the original structure of the Palace and isolating it from the surrounding environment. A decorated façade was built specially by Orlando Grosso for the construction of the new De Ferrari square on the Eastern Side of the Palace.
On the day of its opening (14th May 1992), the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa – 38,000 sq.m. and 300,000 cu.m. – was the largest restoration project undertaken in Europe.
Thanks to Architect Giovanni Spalla’s project, the building complex has regained its original “Vannonian architecture”, though, at the same time, maintaining its links with the past (medieval structures, Cantoni’s intervention, main front of 1935).

The innovation that constitutes the space-connecting element of the system, is the large “over-hanging path”, a helicoidal steel-structure slope, rising from the lower floors to the terraces.
