Labirinto Luzzati

June 1 – November 3
Sottoporticato

Tireless, intense and versatile, Emanuele Luzzati was an artist and a craftsman gifted with an insatiable and, at times, unconventional creativity. Set design, illustration, animated filmmaking, ceramics – Luzzati was a master in each of these applied arts. It is difficult to subsume all the different forms of his art under one category, and this is why the exhibition resembles a labyrinth.
It is a labyrinth where one can get lost, amidst fabrics, ceramics, illustrated books and set designs made for the theatre both in Italy and around the world, and materials of every type, many of which are being presented to the public for the first time, all transformed into fairy-tale objects by the skilled hands of the artist. It is a labyrinth where one ends up “in a dream with one’s own hands, feet and thoughts”, to put it in the words of Giorgio Strehler.
And lastly, it is also a labyrinth to be negotiated as a way of getting to know and appreciating the art of Luzzati, starting from his beginnings in Lausanne, where he was forced by Italy’s Racial Laws to take refuge in the early 1940, to the very special experience of working for Genoa’s Teatro della Tosse, founded in 1975 along with Aldo Trionfo and Tonino Conte.
On show also the illustrations of the Divine Comedy for the Corriere della Sera, the ceramics created in Albissola and the animated films he made together with Giulio Gianini, for which he
received two Oscar nominations.
Luzzati’s art is total, capable of holding together diverse materials, techniques and subjects in an utterly original – and now utterly recognisable – style that embodies lightness,
imagination and genius.
